Teaching Jobs In Colleges Full Time or part Time

Teaching college classes can be fun and entertaining, while teaching the students what they need to learn for their discipline. If you have an interest in finding a teaching job in college than you will want to read the information below about the different positions available and where to search for the jobs.

  1. Faculty- this position is where most of the professors fit. They are simply professors teaching classes. They may have extra duties such as a club for their discipline or they may just teach classes all day long. Most of this faculty has tenure if they have been at the university or college long enough and have proven their worth. Tenure is a contract a professor signs to work for the university or college for at least ten years.
  2. Adjunct Faculty- this type of professor means they do not have tenure, nor will they. They are part time teachers. This means they teach a few classes in a discipline to help. Most of the time adjunct faculty teaches at night because they have day jobs and usually the classes are basic level to that discipline, though not always.
  3. Head or Dean of the Department- this position is not usually open long unless someone is about to retire and typically they try to hire within the department first before looking for other professors. The head of the department means the person is in charge of that discipline or department. There is a head of the literature department, head of the sciences, and so on. In order to qualify for this position you usually have to have a doctorate and a tenure position. This is a job to aspire to when you are first starting out as a professor. Not only would you still be teaching courses in your discipline, but you would also be running the department. Therefore, there is a bit more work involved.

Now that you know the teaching jobs in colleges, you should know where to find them. Finding a teaching position can be very easy, but being accepted may be a bit difficult. First, there are only so many universities and colleges. They may not all be looking for someone with your expertise so occasionally you have to wait for a position to open up. You might even have to start as adjunct faculty before you can obtain a tenure position. Therefore, the first place to look is the Internet. There are many search engines listing jobs available at colleges. The next place you may look is in the local newspaper. Often colleges post an ad in the newspaper to try to hire locally before looking elsewhere. You can also check the college’s website for a direct link to their employment page. Most colleges and universities advertise on their web page because it requires no cost to them and they can put a larger ad on the page.

The qualifications required for the position you seek will be listed on their web page. It is important to make sure you have all of the qualifications before you apply for the position. Like most jobs, they will not even look at your resume if they see you lack the qualifications. Teaching jobs in colleges are wonderful positions as you are helping others learn the information they need for a career. It is also rewarding to know you have made a difference in their lives. Remember that there are plenty of places on the web to search for job positions. You will always have more opportunities then a local newspaper.
