Background Checks On Employees

Companies want to ensure that they are getting the best employee. There are many parts to seeking new employees from sorting through resumes to the actual hiring of the employee. Each step is important to gathering the information they need to ensure the best employee has been hired. Part of the hiring process is background checks on employees

Some of the companies have background checks on employees as an option while other companies must have these checks run. What I mean is that if you work for a bank, the airport, or some form of security or police you will have to take a background check. Other companies or large corporations have the option to make you go through a background check and most often will have that as part of the process.

Background checks on employees are solely for the purpose of weeding out the individuals who may not be suited for the position. Take the airport as an example. The airport has increased security, which means that no one is allowed past security that does not have a plane ticket. It used to be that anyone could go meet a plane and its passengers. Now you have to either be an employee or have a ticket. As an employee, you cannot have a record, therefore the airport TSA agents will screen your fingerprints to run a background check.

Background checks for employees can consist of running your information to see if you have a criminal history or even run your financial data. Companies who deal in a lot of money will need to know that you are honest and ethical. This means a potential employee with high debts can seem like a potential problem. When background checks are run on employees, you as the employee are made aware of the check. You will have to sign paperwork agreeing to the background check.

The company must be upfront about why they need the information and sign an agreement that it is not going to be public knowledge. When I mention that companies can run your financial data, I should be more specific. They can access your credit history, but they cannot seek the information without telling you, and they cannot go directly to your financial institutions for the information. You will have to sign an agreement that you have authorized this check.

As an employee, if you have nothing to hide you should not worry about these background checks. You do have rights and if you feel the company does not need to have your credit scores, as they are private, you do not have to sign the agreement for that particular area. They will still run a background check on your criminal history. If you are applying for a job as a driver or will have to drive a company car, the corporation will also need to check your driving history. They will make sure that you do not have any violations such as DUI’s, driving without a license, and etc.

Background checks on employees must be within the laws and their rights. This means that if an employee feels uncomfortable giving out private information to a company they will have recourse action to study why the company needs that information, and if they must supply that information to get the position. If the company does not have a sound reason within the rights of the employees to ask for the employee background information, the person does not have to sign the agreement. It is best to seek your states government website if you have questions about background checks on employees and what is within your rights as the employee.

Most corporations that seek background checks on employees are dealing with sensitive information that they do not want leaked by an inside employee. Places like the police, fire, airports, security firms, and banks also seek background checks to make sure the individual is right for the position where safety is the number one factor. Background checks can seem invasive, however, companies are just trying to look out for themselves and their other employees. It is becoming a widely used tool for the hiring process in several major companies and of course, those dealing with security to make sure their employees remain safe and that they have the right person for the position they are advertising.
